I'm re-reading this series because I never got through the whole thing, and with the last one still sitting on my TBR shelf I figured I'd start back at the beginning. I remember liking this the first time I read it. The smart-aleck Druid, the even more smart-alecky dog, vampires, witches and werewolves, oh my. But now I know what's coming so I have time to slow down and think about what I've read. And I'm not as happy with it as the first time. First off, It's pretty much just fight scenes, one right after the other. Fight scenes where Atticus might get bashed and bruised, but hey, he can fight on without pain and a night sleeping outside fixes him right up. There's no character building at all - we don't learn anything new about anyone. Second, the sexism. All the women here are viewed as how attractive they might be as sex partners, including the goddesses. Nice and sexy. Evil and secy. All-powerful goddesses and sexy. Atticus' physical appearance and his emotional age actually match, despite being over 2000 years old. Okay, well I can go with the idea that it's a fantasy novel written for 14 yr old boys. I liked Coyote, but I really didn't like the accent. If he was Dine he shouldn't be talking like a southern yokel. And I liked the political machinations of the Norse gods. Well onto the next and I hope I can get through all of it with a better opinion.
