I like this one--especially the last stanza!
I bought myself some flowers today Not the usual red roses given from a new romance professing love and hoping for favors or the ordinary supermarket boquet picked up in guilty haste by a husband asking for forgivness I didn't buy a cheery basket recieved from thoughtful friends wishing happy birthday or congratulations It was not a tasteful arrangment sent by aquaintces to replace words sorry for your loss or get well soon nor the pratical houseplant given with a mothers love but requiring much care I chose birds of paradise standing alone and proudly free their colorful heads heald high I put them in a deep blue vase and placed them on my table Feeling pleased I said to myself So this is what it is to fly alone |
