Isaiah I walked over to the bed that Billy was laying on. He’d just come out of surgery. “Hey Billy.” I said trying to sound casual but my voice cracked. Billy’s eyes flickered open for a moment and then drooped shut. I swallowed the lump in my throat. Nora I woke up screaming for the ninth night in a row. I was having nightmares about the accident, the day my life started falling apart. I went to the bathroom and splashed water on my face. I looked at myself in the mirror. There were dark circles under my bloodshot eyes. My hair was wild. Everything was so different now, even the way I looked. Be brave Nor, you promised. I swallowed hard and went back to bed. Violet I woke up suddenly. I glanced at the clock and groaned. 1:00 AM. I rolled over and hid under my pillow. I was having trouble sleeping lately. I felt myself starting to cry and stopped. No Violet. I wiped my eyes and swallowed my tears. Back to sleep. Marcus “Marcus?” my mom called into my bedroom. “Marcus are you awake sweetie?” she paused, “Okay, I’ll see you tomorrow.” More broken promises. Whatever. I swallowed painfully and crawled out the window. Isaiah I was awake. I’d been sleeping and now I was awake. I tried to remember what had waken me up. I listened to for any kind of sound. I heard the quiet beeping of Billy’s heart on the machine. I listened a little longer and decided it had been nothing. I was about to go back to sleep when I heard a faint voice saying my name. Billy. I flew up and over to his bed. “Hey bud, wadaya need?” I said quickly. “Hey… Ise” he said slowly. He took in a deep breath and continued, “I.. love you ok? I.. wanted you to.. know.” I nodded. “I love you too, Billy.” We sat their in silence for a minute. Billy took in a deep breath and let it out slowly. “Billy no, you can’t-” my voice choked off into a sob- he was already gone. Some doctors and nurses rushed in. I didn’t stick around to watch them mess with his body.
