At 3:30, when I’m supposed to meet Marcus, I’m sitting in the back of the school. I’m not sure what I’m hiding from. Maybe I’m just hiding hoping that someone will find me, but not really caring who. It’s not like Marcus is going to miss me. I mean, he’s probably not even here. I sit on the mossy ground hug my knees to my chest. It’s starting to get colder, summer turning into fall. Summer used to be my favorite season. Now I don’t care. I really just want to fast forward my life until I’m happy again. Like skipping the sad parts of movies. Eventually, I think I’ll be happy again.
“Hey,” someone says from behind me. I glance back and see Marcus. Just my luck. “I waited for you.” Marcus says. I don’t say anything. He comes and sits down by me. “Are you cold?” he asks. I shake my head. For the next few minutes we sit silently. This whole time I’m trying not to shiver. Then I just give up and start shaking. Marcus looks at me and then pulls of his jacket and hands it to me. I take it and put it on.
“You should go inside. You’re gonna get sick.” Marcus tells me. I shake my head. “Violet, it freezing out here. I don’t know what you want me to say or why you’re mad at me or whatever but… I don’t want you to freeze so please just come inside.” Marcus says all this and I think maybe he’s joking or something but then I look at him and he’s looking at me seriously and so I nod. I nod and he stands and helps me up and we walk inside.

Marcus

If Violets gonna keep freaking out on me I cant keep doing this. It’s breaking everything I’ve been working for. Not getting attached, not wanting to get to know someone, not wanting someone to want to get to know me, and not caring about anything or anyone so that when I’m done with school I can leave this town and never look back.
“If you’re gonna keep freaking out on me then just tell Pete and get it over with.” I tell her, I don’t mean to hurt her feelings or anything, but I guess I do. She looks at me sadly and then looks at the floor.
“Oh. I thought… yeah okay.” She says slowly. What did she think?
“Yeah okay what?” I say quietly, scared of what she might say. She looks up at me then back at the floor again. “Yeah okay I’ll stop freaking out.” she says slowly, “But, I’m kind of used to freaking out on a regular basis so that could be tricky.” she says. I laugh, “I’m sure you can do it.” I say, throwing my arm over her shoulders without thinking. When I realize that I have I pull my arm away and shove my hands in my pockets awkwardly. I clear my throat.
“So do you need a ride?” I ask her.
“Well I was kinda thinking that since I’m supposed to be teaching you and I haven’t I could, like, maybe do that. I don’t have to be home yet so if you don’t have anywhere to be…”
“I don’t have anywhere to be.” I say, and then realize that it’s truer than I thought. Those are the perfect words, that’s exactly how I feel; I have nowhere to be. That’s part of why I’m leaving this town, because I need somewhere where I can be.
“But I think we should go somewhere else. Because I don’t want to get in trouble for being late.” Violet says. I smile down at her- she’s kinda short- and she smiles down at the floor.
“Okay, where do you want to go?” I ask her.
“Somewhere with food I’m hungry.”
“Okay, lets go.”
