  She stands against the railing,
hair in fabulous disarray.
Excitement shines bright
as midday in eyes of
cerulean blue.

Thinking jumbled thoughts of
flannel pajamas,
Great Expectations,
and Santa Claus;
She glides down the stairs
with the elegance of
a Fairytale Princess.

Lights of white,
chill as snow,
illuminate the room.
This house shall forever echo
those words....
"Has he come yet?"
"Has he come yet?"
"Has he come yet?"

The St. Nicholas that lies
dormant within me
smiled, yet a distant ache still
throbs with his heart,
knowing this moment cannot last forever.

I sigh a lonely "Not yet, Sweetheart."
and slowly climb the stairs,
holding a small hand, and wishing
it could last forever.

This is wonderful writing, Paul, and a piece with which most of us can quickly identify.
