  THE MORNING IS CALM

By

Victoria Booth

The morning is calm, the voices and shadows no longer lurk.

Things will stay calm until about dusk when once again things will go berserk.

Loud voices shout “kill!” Shadows flash shiny steel.

There is no one to assist, and so the screams of anguish persist.

And I wait…. With tensed muscles and a fast-paced-heart, I listen through the darkness of the night,

Having to hear, and sometimes see, the people’s plight.

Sometimes I’ve forgotten something on the way home, but in the blackness of the night, I do not venture out alone.

Nay, that is their world, not mine, and I choose not to venture forth.

Forever, it seems, I sit upon my rooftop listening, waiting…

Constantly alert.

I sleep not, for I wait for the dawn, and I do not nod off, though I may stretch and yawn.

I wait each night for something special, maybe only to me.

As I wait on the rooftop, the wind whips through my hair, sometimes so strong it jiggles my chair, but I wait nonetheless…
For morning, for dawn.

The purple and orange sky, the reasons I know not why, but it brings the voices and screams to a halt.

Yes, I wait because in daylight, then I may sleep too.

I’m awake each night with the rest of the berserk world, but I am not one of them.

I am alone in fear each night on my rooftop, always alone, and I savor and cherish each dawn…

Because the morning is calm.
