I read American Sphinx: The Character of Thomas Jefferson by Joseph J. Ellis, winner of the National Book Award.  Ellis has a very engaging style of writing, and I found myself drawn in immediately.  The focus is on the events that formed the character and personality of Jefferson rather than a straight chronological history.  Ellis chooses five major eras from the life of Jefferson that had an impact on his thinking and discussed them in detail.  I enjoyed it very much.
