I created discussion threads for each topic so we can post brief reviews of the books we read.

Sorry, I have no banner skills.  As I said, I'm starting with Destiny of the Republic by Candice Millard, about the James Garfield assassination.  I also have a separate "at work" book on Lenin, which is pretty interesting.  I never knew much about the "Russian Empire" under the Romanovs, and I can see where the revolutionaries came from.

I sent a PM to Jerelyn/Letty to see if she could make a banner for this challenge. Keep your fingers crossed. wink

I just made a few last night, but haven't had time to upload them to a website or anything yet. Will do so in the next few days. Stay tuned! In the meantime, if you know of specifics sizes (width x height) that work well, advise away!

Have you all seen the banners and buttons that Letty made? I think that they are great! Gotta go and pick one out for my signature line now. ;) Dw, my Dh is a whiz at the computer but even he had trouble with sizing on banners last year! Letty seems to have this down to a fine science!

That is the problem if you are in several challenges you have to use the buttons.  I tried to make them smaller and they looked really lame!  I am working on my banner skills.crying

Nothing to say you couldn't change your banner. One with each completed book?

Very true DW.

Letty, I didnt mean I couldnt get them to work, just meant it was hard to choose between them. I greatly appreciate your making them.

I finished the two books I started early, and am starting another history book now since it's a library book and I want to get it back on time.  I'm going to be reading a lot of history this year!

I finished Destiny of the Republic by Candice Millard today.  It's not a real deep history, but gives a fascinating overview that was very interesting to me.  I posted a review in the "Uncle Sam" thread.

For everyone who's posted their History Challenge list already, I wanted to make a personal plea...

Please post the books you're thinking about reading for each category! A list of potential titles is great way for newcomers to get acquainted with the breath and depth of history available. And it helps those of us (Ahem... me.) who are having topic-block. I love scrolling through everyone's list to get ideas about what to read next - even if it's as simple as a title and author. It's basically window shopping for budding history nerds. (Again... me.) Heaven's to Betsy, you can even change your potential title or read some other book entirely to complete that category. There's no History Forum police, that I know of...

I added a couple of books to my list, but I tend to do a lot of my nonfiction reading at random.

I signed up for the History Challenge yesterday, incorporating it into my 2012 Challenge, which is a 12x12 (12 books in each of 12 categories, in honor of 2012).  So 12 categories in this challege works perfectly for me!  I love history and really want to go back to school for a Master's in European History, but alas, I must buy groceries and pay the mortgage instead.

I just completed a WWII memoir and am using it for the WWI/WWII component of the challenge, but I feel a little like I'm cheating, using a memoir.  Any opinions on that?  It was an excellent book: All But My Life by Gerda Weissman Klein.

I am also reading a WWII memoir that I am planning to use (On Hitler's Mountain by Irmgard A. Hunt) and used a memoir for the To Sea category.  I was assuming memoirs are okay if they are about historical events.  Is that true or should I look for something else?

I'm not too far into it yet but so far it is interesting.  I'll let you know when I finish.
