Welcome back to The Roaring '20s!!

I've kept it relatively simple, as requested.  There are two challenges to choose from :)  Pick and choose as you will.

This challenge starts on January 1st and ends on December 31st.  There will be a separate thread for lists.

Happy Reading!

CHALLENGE ONE - 2020

1) The Roaring 20s - Read a book set in the year '20 of any century

2) Four Eyes - Read a book where a character wears glasses

3) Time Lapse - Read a book that spans at least 20 years

4) Expats - Pick a country.  Read three books set in that country

5) Ancient Aliens - Read a book set in ancient Greece, Rome or Egypt

6) Newbie - Read a new to you author

7) Newly Elected - Read a book featuring a President or Prime Minister, an election or any elected official

8) Rain of Tears - Read a book featuring a wedding or a funeral

9) Classy - Read a classical HF book

10) Rainbows - Read a book with a color in the title

BONUS - In honor of Cheryl, read a book she read or discussed here on PBS

CHALLENGE TWO - 20/20

**Read any 20 HF books you want**  :)

Thanks, Carolyn!  Love how you honored Cheryl!

I was going to ask if there was any chance we can have a "Discussion" thread?  But upon further reflection, I see that that's probably what this thread is for.  LOL!  I hope people post what they are reading for each category.  It's a nice resource for ideas.

Hey, Carolyn!  Question - for the "read a classical HF" book, do you mean classical in the sense that it was a book written as historical fiction and has become a classic of the genre (like Memoirs of a Geisha, Roots, etc.) or do you mean a book that at the time it was written wasn't historical fiction as it took place during the current time but to us in the modern era it is "historical" fiction, e.g. Wuthering Heights, A Tale of Two Cities, War and Peace, stuff like that?

Hi Shelley,

I think any of those are acceptable, to be honest.  No book police here - it's up to your discretion! :)

Okay, I'm going to try a challenge YET AGAIN.  2020 just might be the year I finish!

I was reviewing the 2014 HF & HM Challenge lists and discussion threads trying to find when I had a read a certain book. In looking for it, I came across several comments from Cheryl about books she had read. She always wrote wonderful, insightful and easy to read reviews. It was a great trip down memory lane. Thanks for including her in this year's challenge, Carolyn. It is good for us to remember her in this way.

I finished Black Sheep by Georgette Heyer last night and slid it right into the Rainbow book for the challenge!

Georgette Heyer Regency Romances are great fun - always so clever, and written with wit and style. Black Sheep didn't disappoint. The story of a love struck young heiress and the charming, and oh-so-gentlemanly fortune hunter. Our heiress is being raised by two 'spinster' aunts, if one counts age 28 as spinster. The fortune hunter's long banished uncle (the black sheep) is also on scene and in his most unconventional, 'care-for-nobody' style woos and wins the heart of the 28-year old aunt.

Supporting characters abound, each with his or her own role to play, wonderful dialog, great pacing ... a fun read that kept my attention, and was over all too soon.

Recommended ... 4/5 stars

~Kelly

I’m reading The Throne of Caesar by Steven Saylor for the Ancient Aliens category. I love the Gordianus series and wasn’t aware Saylor wrote the next book in the series, as so much time had passed since the last one. It’s like meeting an old friend for coffee! âºï¸

I've got 2 down for the challenge.  Woo hoo!

I read Luncheon of the Boating Party by Susan Vreeland for  the Expats category (the first of 3 books for the category).

Yesterday I finished The Giver of Stars by Jojo Moyes, which I'm using for the Newbie (new-to-me author).

I started reading The Dark Monk by Oliver Potzsch, which doesn't fit in any of the categories so I'll use it for the second challenge of reading any 20 books I want.  LOL!  I'll also use it for the Historical Mystery Challenge.

Started The Rebellion of Jane Clarke by Sally Cabot Gunning. I heard belatedly that it’s the third in a series, so I hope I’m not going to be too confused. It’s for the Ex-Pats category; I picked USA as the country.

Done!  I completed all categories of the main challenge and read over half of the "Read Any 20 Books You Want" category.  Yea!!!  Thanks, Carolyn!
