I won a copy of Deception by Gaslight in a PBS swap - chose it because it sounded interesting. For a first novel, I really enjoyed it. I won't say that it was the most absorbing mystery I've ever read since it took me a few weeks to finish it (and it's not a long book)! It was enjoyable enough that I will try another book by her and I'm pretty sure it's on my WL. I don't plan to set any record for myself in the challenges this year, but I'm going to give it a try again. |

I filled in some more of the books that I've read lately and it's obvious that I'm not setting any reading records but I'm READING!!! YAY! It might be obvious to some that I've become hooked on the Kinship series by Jess Montgomery. These books take place in the Appalachia section of Ohio in the 1920's where coal mining was king. In each book there is a mystery to be solved and we have a wonderful protagonist in the form of Lilly Ross who becomes one of the country's first female sheriffs after her husband is killed. I find Jess Montgomery to be a story teller of the first rate. Her writing is exquisite and you can just feature yourself within the pages of her books. Other than SKP (bless her and rest her marvelous soul) I can't recall an author who had me hooked quite as much as Jess Montgomery - although maybe I just can't remember that far back - LOL!!!! I do feel blessed to have finally found these books as they have helped me out of the reading slump I've been in for years. Keep in mind, these comments are just my opinion..... |

Janice, I have to say that I found the third book in the Kinship series at the library (The Stills). I just finished it and now I'm at a loss as to what to read because it was sooo good - AGAIN. Her next book doesn't come out until March so I'm going to have to do some digging and see what else grabs me... |

Soo, I decided on a straight mystery/thriller by Michael Koryta. His books always "grab" me. Just ordered Never Far Away. I hope this fills the bill! |

I'm not making much progress on this challenge, but more progress than I've made the last two years that I attempted it. LOL! Been quiet around the ol' HF forum. Someone else jump in and tell us what you're reading! I'm currently reading The Butterfly Cabinet by Bernie McGill, which isn't probably technically a mystery but more like a mysterious occurrence from the past being explained. Since I am not the biggest HF mystery person, I've gotta' take liberties where I can. :)

I just finished A Rising Man (Sam Wyndham, Bk 1) :: Abir Mukherjee set in 1919 Calcutta. Very good description of India under British rule. Well written characters and mystery |
