First published in 1962. The author says, " He sat with me during more than one hundred hours of interviews while he patiently told me the details of his life and explained the customs and rituals of his people. He then listened and criticized through many more long hours as, together, we read and checked the manuscript. Waipuldanya began life on the Roper River in the southeast corner of Arnhem Land. Since then, by his own efforts, he has raised his status until today he is a sophisticated and educated man, but one who has never forsaked the culture of his primitive ancestors."

Illustrated by noted Australian artist Ainslee Roberts.
