"Actress and the Marquis" reminds me of a 1930s romantic comedy--everyone's constantly going in opposite directions without realizing, everyone has a conflicting agenda and if a conversation can be plausibly misinterpreted, it will be. The comic timing is great, and it's always nice to see a heroine who has some focus for her life other than whether or not she marries the hero. This is Holbrook's best book, a charming romantic romp.

Hoping to foil his grandmother's matchmaking attempts, the Marquis of Havesham pretends he is engaged to the completely unsuitable Jezabel Clinton, but their charade backfires when they really fall in love.
