This had helpful insights. Using this book and it's insider's stories helped my daughter craft her essay and her interview for college. It wasn't her grades or her SAT score that got her accepted to NYU, USC, Carnegie Mellon, Boston University and more, it was the essay and the interviews. She was one of those students definitely not at the top of her class. It was knowing that the essay had to be gripping and personal without the I grew up a poor child in ...and that for some the interview is really surprisingly paramount. It's not the "how to" this book provides, it's the "how it works" so student can adapt herself/himself to what it is the schools are actually doing. For example, yes, they can tell if the essay isn't written by the student and she tells you why, what the hallmarks are she looks for in an essay that indicates it was not written by a student.
