Very beautiful and instructive is the figure in this exhortation. The babe by a natural instinct seeks its mother's milk as its appropriate nourishment: so the newborn soul turns to the revealed word of God as the appointed food of its faith, hope, and purity. Milk contains all the elements necessary for the nourishment and growth of the human body, especially in its infancy ; thus the word of God contains all that is required for the preservation and development of the divine life in the soul. It is by the devout study of Holy Scripture that all believers " grow in grace and in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ." As we are textit{lorn of the word of God (see 1 Pet. i. 23 and Jas. i. 18), so by it are we nourished up in faith and good doctrine. Ponder Paul's noble testimony to this great truth. "But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them; and that from a child thou hast known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation, through faith which is in Christ Jesus. All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness ; that the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works." 2 Tim. iii. 14?17. The sufficiency of the Holy Scriptures for the nourishment of every principle of the life of godliness is here solemnly asserted.
