I really enjoyed the first Corean Chronicles trilogy. This book, not so much.

The storyline was interesting, albeit exactly what is going on is kept hidden from the main characters, and from us the readers. It was kind of confusing to try to read the story and make sense of everything. What parts am I supposed to know are hidden and hence, unknowable, and what parts are just waiting to be revealed later in the book. This dichotomy in my mind really detracted from being able to simply enjoy the story.

The 2 main characters, an Alector and a Cadmiam, were not really engaging characters. They simply were the vessels the author used to advance the story. I did not find myself liking them particularly, nor even disliking them. It was like eating oatmeal. Mushy and bland.

Finally, this book reminded me of a Recluce book WAY more than any of the previous Corean books. This story, with a few changes, could have taken place in the World of Recluce. That is not good. I liked the original because I felt it was different enough from Recluce to be really enjoyable.
