One of the best "survival stories" I've ever read; I can reread with the same pleasure and have over the 20 years since first receiving it as a gift. I now send it to others through PBS! Lauren joined two friends to fly across the highest peaks of the Sierra range almost on a lark, and her miraculous survival by hiking down its eastern slope, which she judged the most direct route though much more rugged than the western way. If you enjoy real people's real stories, this book is a must!

Written thirty years ago, this narration of the incredible journey in wilderness made by a young woman who survived a small plane crash is quite gripping. From a psychological viewpoint, the thought process of a person in such a dire predicament are quite interesting.

From the cover...The drama began as Lauren Elder joined two friends for a pleasure flight from San Francisco to Death Valley. The little plane strained to rise above the jagged crest of the High Sierra. The views were magnificent. Suddenly, Lauren's excitement turned to shock. The plane was heading straight for the mountain. It smashed fifteen feet short of the summit. Her friends dead, her body broken and bleeding, Lauren Elder faced the greatest challenge of her life-a terifying descent down a wall of rock and ice.
