When Becky's father accepts a visiting professorship at the University of London, he suggests she come with him. Becky is delighted, and after getting permission from her junior high school principal, they are off to England.

During a visit to a farm in Surrey, Becky with her new-found friend, Rebecca the horse, stumbles into the "Eye of the Fog" and is carried back through time to ancient Britain. She emerges in the middle of a desperate struggle in which ruthless men are seeking to exterminate a race of benevolent centaurs.

Summoned to this time by the wise and far-seeing First Ones, Becky undertakes a perilous mission -- which only she can accomplish -- to save the centaurs. In fulfilling this task, Becky faces a series of challenges that try both her ingenuity and strenght of character. At last she must stand up to the ultimate test of her faith and will as she is called upon to open the Path to the Stars -- the only hope for the centaurs' survival.

Robert Siegel has written a totally believable fantasy novel, achingly beautiful and absolutely compelling, which readers will put down only with the greatest reluctance.
