Liked this booked for the secondary characters, found myself skipping to their part in the story, that doesn't bode well for the main couple in a romance. Would recommend only for the secondary story.

An American girl of Mohawk/English descent winds up walking 250 miles to London to get to the bottom of her father's death. Putney comes thru again, with interesting characters and decent plot.
Lovely characters, with details and humor.

This is another in Putney's series of "Fallen Angels."

Lord Robert Andreville has spent years spying on Napoleon for the British government. He has returned home from the wars damaged, with his nerves strung tight and his spirit ravaged. He sees little to look forward to in his life until Maxima Collins literaly trips over him.

Maxie is an American and half Mohawk. Her father has died under suspicious circumstances and left her in the care of relatives that she doesn't know or understand. So she sets out to walk to London, quite a trek, to investigate her father's death.

When Robin hears her plan, he insists on coming along to protect her. Maxie doesn't think she needs protecting, but as they travel, she finds that a man who has lived by his wits in dangerous country for many years is handy to have along.

Putney has a gift for creating characters that feel completely real. Here the hero and the heroine are dealing with deep emotional damage and the way they are able to help each other heal is wonderful.

This book should not be missed

Lord Robert Andreville, the second son, returned to his home in Yorkshire after a dozen dangerous years spent spying for his country against Bonaparte. He is soul-weary and unsure what to do with the rest of his life.

Maxima Collins is half-Mohawk and half British. She and her father traveled from their home in America to England, to meet the British side of Maxima's heritage. However, not long after they arrived, Maxima's father died. Maxima overhears her uncle and aunt discussing her situation and Maxima realizes that she needs to travel to London to find out the particulars of her father's death. Along the way, she trips over Robert Andreville and they travel to London together, experiencing lots of adventures and problems.

I thought the whole book was boring. There is a more-interesting romance between secondary characters, but not by much. I was angry when the 'solution' to Maxima's father's death was revealed. The ending was rushed after a leisurely telling of the rest of the story. 3.5 stars

What happens when a master spy returns home for good? That what the hero (Lord Robert) has to figure out. If he is no longer a spy then who is he really. Then again some of those old tricks come in handy.

He accidently meets the heroine (Maxima)who has run away from her conniving family and is determined to discover what really happened to her father. She is also just as determined to keep one sexy "Robin" at arms length. Just as he is just as determined to stay as close to her as possible, whether she likes it or not.

As they explore the english country side looking for clues they are hunted and must depend on each other's skills to survive. This is an amzing book that constantly keep you guessing. Its twist and turns keep you so involved that its hard to put down.

Together they travel across England, evading pursuers and circling each other in a dance of desire, where truth is elusive and only passion is sure. Then dark secrets shatter their idyll, and only love has to power to heal the past...
