This one is good, maybe the first to show the face of war as the grunts live it. About 1963 I remember seeing (stationed in Vicenza at the time) a prize-winning movie called Die Brucke [The Bridge]. It was a semi-documentary in that what it showed had happened pretty much that way. The GI audience left the movie quiet, upset. shocked. Little did we know that half of us would soon be involved in a lot of the same stuff. Buddhists, I think it is, believe that every time you take a life you lose some of your soul. I have been there, and I think they are right. War, just cause, all that counts for nothing.

Count me in. All Quiet has been sitting on my coffee table TBR pile for a month now. Time to start reading.

Hmmm, she said reluctantly.  I didn't think that I wanted to read this book.  Guess I'll be a good sport and go find a copy.  Maybe I'll really love it.

Well, after two more days, I requested a different ISBN, and that person responded. So I will get a copy of the book!

John, as you and I have talked about Elizabethan/Jacboean drama before, have you read Troilus and Cressida? I've heard its views on war described as "Shakespeare trying to start the 20th century 300 years early, but nobody else was ready."

Started reading AQOTWF last night.

Wow! This is really good. And oddly funny in one part. This is a keeper.

I will pull my copy out of my TBR pile and get started on it tomorrow night.
