Cut the squash in half and place it cut side down on a rack in a shallow baking pan filled with a small amount of water. Steam it in a 350 degree oven for about 30 minutes. When it is tender, scrape out the pulp and mash it with 4 T of butter, 1 T of brown sugar, the salt and pepper to taste. Set aside.
Peel, core and slice the apples. Melt 2 T of butter in a skillet and add the apples along with the white sugar. Simmer these until they are tender. Put the apples into a buttered 9" square baking dish and spread the mashed squash over them.
Topping: Crush the corn flakes. Melt 2 T of butter in a skillet. Stir in 1/2 cup brown sugar, the chopped pecans and the corn flakes. Toss this mixture together.
Spoon the topping over the squash and bake at 350 degrees for 15 minutes.
