Ardith's heart was broken ten years ago when the gifted pianist Gavin Parrish didn't show up for a rendezvous in Paris, and now she wonders if he will break her heart again. She has been rebuilding her life while enjoying her job as official hostess of Everett College's guest residence for visting artists and lecturers. But when illness causes the cancellation of an operatic diva's appearance, and she hears that pianist Gavin Parrish will be the replacement, her world is thrown into turmoil.
