Timeless Romance Anthologies offer a variety of stories from different eras of American and British history. I like reading anthologies because I can try new authors without a large time commitment. Reading short works by favorite authors like Annette Lyon is also enjoyable.
THE PLUCKY MISS RUTH (Laura Rollins) -- 2 Stars
To my mind, Miss Ruth Hughes is a squirrel; she needs to get a life. She thinks she's caught in a time warp (a la Groundhog Day {the film}). I forced myself to finish this but didn't enjoy it.
MR. DOWLING'S REMEDY (Annette Lyon) -- 5 Stars
This story is a treasure. Sherville Retreat is a genteel insane asylum. Crandall Dowling was becoming a physician when his mentor sent him to an asylum because Crandall could not control either his words or actions. Beverly Stanton finds her in the same place when her stepfather gets two doctors to determine she is hysterical. The true reason he wants her out of the house is so he can control the family's money.
When a tragedy occurs, things change, and Beverly has a chance to leave the asylum. By then, she and Crandall know they have feelings for each other. If she leaves, what happens to Crandall?
A RAILWAY THROUGH THE ROSES (Lisa H. Catmull) -- 4.5 Stars
A community is at a crossroads; a rail line is needed to keep workers employed. However, Lady Anne Baxter owns the property where the line needs to go and is unwilling to sell. It holds powerful associations with her deceased parents. Adrian Everard must marry a wealthy woman to pay for the railroad, or his father's factory will fold. So, Adrain's father hosts a house party with wealthy women for Adrian to find a wife. This is a unique and interesting story.
