This is another book I obtained as an add on to a wished-for book from David Hamburg and it will look good on the shelf at the old soldiers' home. This UK volume includes numerous illustrations, both of artifacts and artists' depictions of the barbarians in action, as well as considerable text. Beginning with three chapters about those that troubled the Roman Empire, Chapter Four is 'The Empire Fights Back, followed by new troubles--the Moors and Arabs. The final two chapters describe the Scandinavians and the Avars, Magyars, and Mongols.
For example, the author explains that it was socially unacceptable for the gentle born of the West to use the bow, unlike in the East where bows were highly valued. "The only occasion when a western aristocrat might bring himself to touch a bow was in hunting or sport. But never in battle."
