What I admire about this author is that she took familiar tropes and spun them out in new and inventive ways. Louise Cox is avoiding two fortune hunters, but seeks a good husband who wants her, not her fortune. Her brother, who inherited the family's fortune upon the sudden death of both parents, has not been paying attention to Louise's avoidance of the fortune hunters. When an old friend of her mother invites Louise to stay for a month and meet the locals, with an eye to finding a husband, Louise agrees.
The matchmaking mamas are plotting to find a wife for Mr. and Mrs. Sheldon's only son, Paul, a London barrister. These characters have complicated lives and offer Paul intelligent and appropriate solutions to avoid marriage.
I found myself turning the pages as quickly as possible because the story was so unique. There were two places the author could use some improvement: The start was slow, and the ending was a bit long-winded. Otherwise, this is a great treat.
Matchmaking Mamas
**1. Bargaining for the Barrister (2022)
2. An Unwitting Alliance (2023)
3. The Gentleman's Confession (2024)
4. The Rules of Matrimony (2025)
