Very good debut novel about a young boy recruited into a unit of guerrilla fighters.

Excellent reading. War through the eyes of a twelve year old who fights because he has no alternative. He doesn't fight for a cause, family, or honor. But if he doesn't fight he dies. Interesting use of language which is initially difficult to read but soon becomes familiarly smooth. Winner of several wll deserved first fiction awards.

Gripping short novel in first person voice exploring the confusion and survivor instinct of a child soldier. I read it in a night and literally said, "Oh, wow," when I finished it.
