Beauty Fades Dumb Is Forever The Making of a Happy Woman Author:Judy Sheindlin National Bestseller! My father was a kidder, and he could usually make me laugh; in laughing I was able to feel better about myself. He also gave me a piece of advice about beauty that has stayed with me. Beauty fades, my father used to say, but dumb? Dumb is forever. In the course of her career as a Family Court Judge and a presiding Judge on her popular TV courtroom show, she has seen, over and over again, the devastating fallout for women who made stupid choices on marriage, parenting, and their future. She has seen women make excuses for men who abuse them, who tolerate demeaning and demoralizing conditions at work, who instead of choosing mates allowed themselves to be chosen, and who elected to defer to men instead of their own judgment. Here, the savvy, opinionated, and irrepressible Judge Judy exposes these dirty little secrets so many women share, and offers her own take on the destructive repercussions they have. Using real cases involving women of every background'from the most affluent and successful to young girls just starting out'as well as stories from her own life, Judge Judy shows women how to fix their attitude, and equally important, how to teach their daughters to follow their dreams while keeping their individuality intact. In Beauty Fades, Dumb is Forever, Judge Judy uses provocative and hilarious examples from her own life to instill in women the urgency of building a solid foundation from within. Of building character. Of nourishing yourself. Of learning from mistakes and fighting battles you can't win. Of understanding what sex can and cannot do for you. Of the importance of humor and self-reliance. Her straight-talk tells women to get on with it, and never forget that Smart is Forever.Read by Judge Judy.« less
Very straight forward & interesting perspective from Judge Judy. She tells it like it is and I wish I'd had her advice at a much younger age. I liked this book and I'd recommend it especially to older teens and young women starting out. It might help a lot of women steer clear of some of the problems my generation has gotten into.
Every woman should be required to read this book. Judge Judy is brilliant and offers perfect advice. I just kept nodding and silently saying "Exactly!" to myself as I read this page-turner. This is self-help for the woman who thinks its okay to yield to what a man wants and give up her own wants and needs for him. Sadly, its likely only JJ fans and women who are already smart and independant will read this book. My favorite advice of JJ is the "Divorce Insurance" for marriage, because it is also sound for any relationship.
I thought this book was great. I enjoy Judge Judy's outspoken personality and she can tell a pretty funny story, too. I didn't agree with everything that she said, but it was worth the read, and there was a couple of times that I laughed out loud. It's a perfect afternoon read.

Funny, but to the point. I guess her basic idea is that both women and men are happier in their relationships if women have self-respect and do not go against it solely to please men. However, Judy is realistic and points out that women should not expect to be able to change their men much, either. She tells us frankly about how she handled some of the problems that were causing her resentment in her own marriage. A good book for both men and women, although a few of the things she did were too passive-aggressive for me; they probably worked because her husband truly appreciates her and has a good sense of humor. A lesser man might have hauled off and punched her when she woke him up with clashing pot lid "cymbals" because for the umpteenth time she had gotten up in the night and sort of fallen into the toilet because the seat was up. (Her reasoning: If I am going to have a rude awakening in the night, then so are you!")
Judge Judy doesn't sugar coat her words - its out, its raw. My favorite chapter was "Do Not Abdicate". The enitre book is inspirational, instructional, motivational, and full of common sense and practical advice. Funny, quick tempered, and blunty honest.
