This is a meaty, delicious story about the smothered (only) daughter of two hypochondriacs. They want her to alternate between ailing and caring for them, but they have no interest in Julia as a separate person. Julia is an introvert who only feels whole when riding her horse or reading her novels (behaviors frowned upon by her parents).

Captain Blunt needs a wife. The home he inherited while in the wars needs significant repairs, and he lacks the funds to handle these problems. He also has three illegitimate children who are wild and uncivilized.

Julia balks when she sees that her father has "given" her to an older gentleman who promises to stay in London so Julia can continue to care for her parents. The rest of this story is fantastic. The twists and turns are engaging and make the pages fly. I'm devastated that this book ended because it was so enthralling.
