Beth tells the story of an exceptionally resolute, shy, loyal collie in Cumbria. Her master is Todhunter, a farmer who is something of a loner, but whose understanding of animals is absolute, and together with Beth he forms a remarkable partnership. In a gesture of revenge against a neighbor, Todhunter uses Beth to steal some of his sheep; soon the two of them are launched on a trail of sheep-rustling in which Beth's ability to anticipate her master's intentions overcomes all practical barriers. Once these activities come to light, Todhunter and Beth flea North and disaster strikes, leaving Beth to undertake her last heroic journey.
