We are new bird feeders and were looking for which birdseed works best. The store has many choices of birdseed; our first purchase was a poor one. If you have never picked up a Storey Book*, you are in for a real treat with this one. In a mere 32-pages, I got the real scoop about birdseed choices for every season. I never thought to give orange slices or chopped apples to birds.

If that weren't enough, Rhonda Hart explains how to choose bread for birds, how to feed orphan birds, feeding birds by hand, how to make your own suet, and so much more. I had no idea that birds seek different foods at different seasons of the year. To meet a bird's needs, he/she must spend most of every waking hour in the pursuit of food. By knowing what foods are needed when -- you can be an asset to the birds in your area.

I had no idea that birds need salt and grit, besides water and food. The author teaches readers how to provide these. Birds may love white bread crumbs but it has low nutritional value. Hart teaches what foods are attractive and have high food value. This is a reference I will use again and again.

*Storey Publishing offers a wide variety of books and bulletins.
Two others I will be reviewing soon are: Easy-to-Build Birdbaths (by Mary Twitchell),
Easy-to-Build Bird Feeders (by Mary Twitchell).
