"If a demon drinks her blood, he is granted a long life. If he eats her flesh, he gains eternal youth. And if he makes her his bride, his clan will prosper."

The main character Misao doesn't just see demons, she's bullied by them. On her sixteenth birthday, it's open season on her and the attacks on her life begin. Luckily, that's when her first love Kyo comes back to town to protect her and claim her as his bride. No, wait. He's a demon, too, and the head of his clan, no less. Didn't see that coming, did you?

It's a darker romance, what with all these demons who want to kill her, marry her or both. Misao has absolutely no interest in marrying a demon who just wants her because she's the bride of prophecy, which only makes it harder on her to discover she still loves Kyo. Kyo's advances are transparent and often result in an injury at Misao's hands. There is plenty of slapstick and low comedy to offset the serious nature of the plot. The art is beautiful though not the most detailed. I can't say enough for Black Bird, but that it won the 2009 Shogakukan Manga Award for shōjo manga.

Viz rated Black Bird for older teens, and with good reason. Sexual tension and references abound and there's more blood than your average teen romance not involving vampires.

Dear Readers,

Recently, I took a trip to the library for the first time in ages, and kind sorta went nuts in the manga section . . . I just never figured our public library would have such expensive books, but boy was I wrong! They have a huge selection, especially in the adult section. At first I was confused why they had teen books in the adult section, but by the time I finished this one, I totally knew why.

Fifteen-year-old Misao Harada has been able to see demons since she was a child. After her sixteenth birthday the demons whom usually arent any more pesky than a playful poltergeist have turned downright deadly and want to consume her for her powers, or force her hand in marriage. Meanwhile, her childhood friend and first love Kyo, has returned to town and has promised to save her from the demons, provided she sleeps with him and agrees to become his bride. It doesnt help that she didnt remember much about him from her childhood, such as hes a tengu demon and leader of his clan.

There is just something so cute and addicting about the characters of Black Bird. I have a huge crush on Kyo and Misao and Kyos six-year-old Tengu servant, Taro. If youve never seen a baby manga character, you must google them! They are sooooocute! (lol)

Anyways, I really had a blast with this one, guys. I also checked out the second volume, so Im super excited to start reading it as well! If you are a fan of manga or not, you should definitely check out Black Bird. You will not be disappointed!
