I am a total Catherine Cookson fan and have either watched the movies or read the books and I say that this book is very good. This story is about the classes in Victorian England which spans from 1843(?) to 1920. It follows a woman named Bridget Mordaunt, who is a controlling woman but has a heart of gold when it comes to those she loves. Everything and everybody who comes into her life she has to help which most of the time turns out badly. This is a dark and brooding story but a page turner! It is quite a long book and sometimes you have to put it down but it has alot of drama with a happy ending.

This book was published in 1990 but reads more like it was published in the 1800's. Set in the 1800's and early 1900's in northern England, it's a multigenerational story blending historical detail, a great story, and many surprises. Extremely heartwarming in places. I really enjoyed it and will read more of Catherine Cookson.
