Julian Symons knew the period he wrote about well. So this mystery is quite convincing in its portrayal of two linked Victorian households where a murder occurs. That was its main interest for me. Also, the man wrote intelligent and educated English, which is more than you can say for most mystery writers.

1890 Blackheath UK Thanks to @gradcat for prompting me to read this book as I am mailing it to her this Friday. I never read a Julian Symons book before and enjoyed this very much. It had a surprise ending and the reader was given clues but they went right over my head. I look forward to reading another Symons book soon. I would highly recommend this novel as I thought it was very cleverly written!

Reading a classic mystery writer like Symons is very rewarding . The plotting and the writing is impeccable, reflecting an era when writers and their publishers allowed for a more leisurely production schedule.
