I enjoyed reading this book. It details the life and sufferings of two young women (one black, one white) on a farm in apartheid South Africa of the 1970's. The focus of the book is on young Marit - bride to the owner. Tembi is a native farm worker. The women's lives intersect and become connected during the last throes of the rule of apartheid. Their relationship is not straight-forward, but complicated, and the author explores each women's prejudices and fears in a manner that feels very honest and realistic. The style is simple and straight-forward in terms of vocabulary, and yet touching and personal.

Very good book, very well and lyrically written about South Africa. As it says in the book jacket, "emotionally immediate perspective on what it means to be black or white in a country where both races live and feel entitlement."
