While advertised as a Pip & Flinx novel, they barely appear anywhere in the story. Not anywhere near as good as the other volumes in this series.

This novel was clearly not originally intended to be part of the Pip/Flinx series. They are really only minor characters in the novel. Not one of Foster's best works but a quick read.

This book is a fast-paced read that leads to an exciting conclusion when a life-form that eats everything gets loose on a populated world.

Interesting to note is that despite this being a Pip and Flinx novel, they are minor characters who don't even appear until at least 1/3 of the way through the book, perform a small, but pivotal action then fade into the background again. It is also unclear as to why they are on this world in particular. There is a hint that Flinx had some idea that he would be needed here but that is never made entirely clear before he is booted to the background after making some vague and veiled comments.

Still, the trio of characters who do take hold of the reins are entertaining and they introduce us to a new alien from the Humanx Commonwealth as well as having the usual suspects, the AAnn, perform their role as foils for the Commonwealth.
