Blue Suburbia Almost a Memoir
Author: Laurie Albanese
Blue Suburbia is a searing memoir so fresh, original, and honest that it will break your heart and renew your faith in the human spirit. With each spare stroke of her pen, Laurie Lico Albanese paints a vivid portrait of the blue-collar landscape of her childhood -- rusted swing sets, auto body shops, greasy hands, home improvements -- tak...  more »

I loved this....I love this type of poetry, not very flowery or over POETIC, just words...to the point and explanatory. I completely understood her pain, her experiences her life. The back of the book is a perfect example of what's in store for the rest of the book. I would hang on to it to read in the future, but want someone else to experience this as well!

Normally I don't enjoy poetry but I really enjoyed reading this.

Just Shake, and Bake

Am I adopted?
I ask my mother

she shrugs
hands me a bag of bread crumbs
drops in a pork chop

while in my other life
a girl who looks like me
is walking home from school

twirling her house key
turning the doorknob
opening the back door

finding her mother in the kitchen
smiling

My favorite poem was about the author's reaction to seeing Picasso's Guernica for the first time, In the Museum of Modern Art.

This is not at all the type of book I enjoy and I can't believe anyone ever bothered to publish it. Speaking of sparse...30 to 50 words or so per page is not my idea of writing a memoir.

I did try to read it and made it about 1/4 of the way. I know there are probably many people who would find it their cup of tea, but that is not me. I also walked out of a movie the other day; maybe my patience is just getting thin.

Lovely "almost a memoir." If you liked "Unraveled" you will love this one...and it is a very quick read.

I enjoyed this book. I read it quite a while ago, however, there are universal truths that all women can identify with in Albanese's work.

Really interesting format--a complex tale told in sparse blank verse. Unique. I thought I wasn't going to like it, but I was wrong.
