Nobody writes better than Jan Burke about the real world of print journalism, and that aspect of her latest Irene Kelly mystery is as strong as ever. The tensions of being the wife of a cop and continuing to work as a crime reporter in the Southern California desert city of Las Piernas have increased with each big story Irene covers: it's almost as though her associates are waiting for her to make some mistake, to fumble a story. When an edgy, rebellious teenage girl asks her to look for her missing mother, Irene crosses the path of a very dangerous serial killer--Nicholas Parrish. He is one of those totally anonymous but enormously gifted and resourceful villains found only in fiction. Parrish kills women who happen to look like Irene (and his abusive mother), and attracts devoted disciples to his grisly cause. Because of Irene's involvement, several more lives are damaged or endangered, and the strain takes its toll on the reporter's mental stability.

This is the first book of this series I've read and I'm hooked. The blurb on the back of the book is right on the money: it's the same intensity as Sandford, Cornwell, Parker and Deaver! GREAT read.

I LOVE this book, I gave it to a friend to read and now I wish I still had my copy of it :) I'm a big fan of the entire Irene Kelly mystery series, they're always fast-paced with great characterizations. "Bones", in particular, is very gripping and actually quite scary. If you enjoy exciting mystery novels with characters you can care about, don't hesitate to pick this one up.

This one had me literally on the edge of my seat most of the time. A heart-stopping series of chases and hunts in the southern Sierra mountains and a southern California city definitely keep one's attention riveted!

This is a little longer than the average Irene Kelly book. I enjoyed it very much. I was looking for books about her that I had not read. Unfortunately, I did read this one a couple of years ago.

You won't put this book down! A true page-turner. Part of the Irene Kelly series. Will appeal to men and women, though sometimes a bit graphic. A lot of action, suspense and justice.

A serial killer with a penchant for torture has his eyes set on Irene Kelly. It gradually becomes clear that he has meticulously planned a trap that ultimately fails. Lots of body parts and bones along the way. I wish there had been more information on the serial killer. The author provides a brief background sketch, but it's really not enough to help us understand him more than superficially. There is a "damsel in distress" aspect to the book that I also did not like - the lone-female-surrounded-by-protective-males was a bit overdone for my tastes. That being said, I did enjoy the book, and would recommend it as a light vacation read.
