This is one of the best books I have read on dog training even though not a single "trick" is formally taught in the book. It's about learning to see the world from the canine perspective and once you do, life with your pooch will be so much more rewarding. Think of your dog as you being plopped down in a foreign country where you don't know the language. Someone comes up to you and says "sit" in their native tongue. Would you know what to do? Probably not. But if they used their body correctly to explain, along with the verbal cue, you might catch on. That's just one example of the author's approach to showing the reader what it is like to be a dog in a human's world.
This book also makes one think about our assumptions and attitudes to humans as well. Learning to think like a dog might also improve one's relationships in the human world as well.

Prose-wise, this book is very well written: intriguing, flows well, makes for a quick read. Substantively it is okay. The main thrust is to encourage the dog owner to understand the thought processes of dogs. Of course this is helpful and necessary when establishing your relationship with your dog, however, it is just one component of resolving issues when they arise. We've got a 6 year old mutt who has been with us since he was 6 months. He's a sweetheart and we love him dearly, but his barking problem has gotten so bad it does affect our relationship because it has us (and others) constantly on edge. I was hoping this book would provide some insight into what's going on in his mind and how to address it, but it did not. That is not to say the book was not worth the read, it just didn't really help us with this particular problem.
Overall, though, it is a book I would recommend for dog owners.

Was not what I had expected. Was a disappointing book; one of few I didn't finish. Has good ideas, but could easily be said in half the space.
