For everyone who has loved James Herriot's stories or books about animals, this book is wonderful:

There is one copy currently available in the system or you can order it via Flylady's web site - this is her vet that wrote this book. He self-published it and I don't think it is available anywhere else yet.

This is my first post in the discussion forums.  I read them a lot for book ideas - but have never posted.  But i read this subject and HAD to post.  Animals are my passion.  I am involved in animal rescue and dog training and have 3 dogs of my own.  I'll try to keep my list brief.

Best Training/Dog Care:

  1. The Perfect Puppy by Gwen Bailey
  2. Puppy School by Gwen Bailey
  3. Sirius Puppy Training by Ian Dunbar

Best Dog Stories/General Reading

  1. Animals as Teachers and Healer by Susan Chernak McElroy
  2. Animals as Guides for the Soul by Susan Chernak McElroy
  3. Dog Series by Susan Conant

Gerald Durrell - My Family and Other Animals and The Whispering Land. among many many others. Unique mixes of conservation, family memoir, travel stories, and lots of animals. Delightful stuff.

For anyone who likes chickens, Hen & the Art of Chicken Maintenance is a funny and touching book.  It is one man's account of raising a few backyard chickens in England.  Guaranteed to make you want a few hens of your own. ;-)
