I received a book with a cracked spine--the book can lie open flat because there is a place where it isn't connected to the back. Before I mark it received, I wanted to know. Is this acceptable condition? I would feel guilty for reposting it.

Mary Ann,

The Help Center says this:

Binding:

  • Must be intact, with no separation on the inside or outside of the book
  • If the book tends to open at a particular page, this is OKAY
  • Small amount of fraying or denting at top or bottom is OKAY

Just opening to the one spot isn't, in and of itself, a problem.  However, if you can see that the part of the book isn't connected to the bookcover, that is a problem.

Thanks! It is as if the book is in two sections. One bunch, then a gap, then another bunch. You can see the white of the back of the spine from the inside.

Mary Ann;  did you mark it "received with a problem"?

I think I'd mark it received with a problem, I think, but I'd check the help center first, just in case.

That's definitely not acceptable.  I'd mark it received with a problem and PM the sender and ask for your credit back.

I did that. The sender said that the rules say that she can't return a credit until she has received at least three books? I can't find that anywhere.

Nope - she is totally mistaken.  She can return a credit if she has one.  Since you marked  the book received, she received a credit for it.

Straight from the Help Center, she is right, she can't give it back until she has received 3:

The first thing under How do I refund a credit to another member? :

In order to give credits to other members, you must first have received at least 3 books from PBS.  Once you have received three or more books, the option will be available for you.
