The Book Depository is taking orders again. I don't know how long they have been back in business, but I was able to place an order a few days ago. It still says "In Process" though.

Does anyone know how long they usually take to pack and ship an order? I placed the order late Friday night. I'm pretty anxious to get these books!

I know when I placed my first (and only - to date) order, I had it in my mailbox a week later.  Granted, I'm on the east coast, near a major metropolitan center, so I think mail from Europe reaches me quicker than other places further inland or away from big cities.  I don't recall the status changing - but then I don't think I looked either.    I wouldn't start worrying for a while still...

I received an order from them a couple of weeks ago about 10 days after placing it. I am officially addicted to Book Depository!

If you placed the order on a Friday night, though, your books may not ship until Monday.

Didn't I read somewhere that they have warehouses in the States?  I swear I read it somewhere on their website...

Has anyone ever used Buy.com?  I wanted to order 3 Nigel Tranter and 1 Jean Plaidy books and get the free shipping and the $10 off google checkout.  I couldn't get the free shipping and $10 off to coincide with each other so I'm debating what to do.

My order now says complete, so I'm assuming that means it's been shipped, right?

Michelle, I'm looking at the site right now, I'll see if I see anything about a US warehouse.

You were right.

From the about us page:

The Book Depository is an international bookseller with our US network being developed and growing all of the time. At present we are able to ship 700,000 US books from 8 fulfillment centers across America, and will soon be able to ship from Germany

Usually it takes about a week, maybe a week and a half for me to get orders from them. If you order more than one thing, be alert to the fact that they often ship books individually so you won't get it all in one big box. Love that site!

I just placed and order last night...  FWIW, my last order came from the UK with Royal Mail postage.  So if they do have US warehouses, I haven't gotten anything from them yet.

As for Buy.com - NEVER AGAIN

We tried to purchase a kayak earlier this summer, using the Google checkout $ off offer.   Well, they told us it shipped and gave us a trakcing number - USPS Priority Mail.  (WTH?  Are they shipping a mini kayak?)   Needless to say, we never received our kayak and it took nearly 6 weeks of going back and forth with them to get a refund, and that only happened when we disputed the charge with our credit card.

The maroons at buy.com customer service (Agnes, my ass - try Pushba!!) kept insisting it was delivered and that the burden was on us to prove otherwise.  Yet they could never give us a valid tracking number - we got tracking numbers for the USPS, FedEx, DHL, UPS, etc.    Turns out the kayak was sitting in a warehouse for a freight company in Canada waiting to be shipped because they didn't have an address for us.

That's my experience with them for a big ticket item - I am leery of trying them again as a result.  Hope you have better luck!

I got part of my order Tuesday, still waiting on one book. The two that have arrived both had Royal postage. Of course, the book that hasn't made it is the first part of a series so I can't start reading yet! Grrr....

Marci, was your order delivered all together, on the same day?

I ordered Elizabeth Chadwick's two books about William Marshall and a Hilda Lewis book. I'm starting to get worried about the missing Chadwick book. I don't have a whole lot of faith in my new carrier.

I've always received my books from them in separate envelopes on different days - sometimes 2 or 3 days apart.

Just put in another order this morning -- will see how long it takes to arrive.  (More Plaidys if you're wondering... The Medici series.)

Just an FYI - for those anxiously awaiting the Plaidy Platagenet and Medici series, I have them all in hand or on the way now from Book Depository.  Muhahahaha.

I guess I should start reading before the hordes come banging on my door. :)

LOL. I have been desperately seeking The Heart of the Lion and The Sun in Splendour from the Plantagenet series. I have all the rest. I may have to break down and buy those two!

I finally got the missing book from my order. It arrived about a week after the first two books were delivered. I'm just happy I got it!

Marci, I have the first book of the Medici series on it's way to me from BookMooch. The Platagenet books are going to be my birthday gift next month. DH doesn't know it yet, but he'll be placing a large Book Depository order for my birthday! I also really, really want the new Colleen McCullough book for my b-day, but I don't think it will be available by then. I'll have to save a gift card for it.
