Can anything be done about books that are coming up in categories that they are NOT. Looking in today's "Cooking, Food & Wine" category, sub cat "Regional and International", there is posted "The Good Cigar: A Celebration of the art of cigar smoking". Please!

What, I like my roasted cigars... I don't have the answer to your question, but you made me chuckle. |

If you know what category it belongs you can scroll to the bottom of the page and edit the data for the incorrect book. |

You can't delete out the category(s) it's been listed in. |

In the top right corner of the book info box, there's a down arrow. Click on that, and then click "edit book data." You can adjust the category, correct spelling, etc., there. Your edits will then go into a virtual pile to be approved by a volunteer approver.
There's a great thread on editing data here |

By hitting the edit arrow, it takes you to a pre-filled out page with the book info. From there you can ADD info, but I see no way to DELETE info. Someone has added the book to a bunch of categories that it does not fit into...cooking (unless you count cooking your lungs) -- entertainment (doesn't fit any of those sub category) -- business & investing (tho a lot of investments do go up in smoke) -- and so on. I would guess that these unrelated categories were added to get it posted in a wide number of digests, if it belonged or not.

Additionally, more and more books are getting listed in category they do not belong in. There are far too many in the reference section (classical novels are NOT a reference book!) and travel is starting to load up with the trend. |

Sherry may have to chime in here, but from what I understand, if you edit book data, and change the category that is now the only place that it will be listed. There is only one line to enter the category now, and that will be where it is found. ETA: A lot of the category reference are linked from Amazon, and if they have them place incorrectly it can carry over to here. I don't think people are listing incorrect categories on purpose. I thought when the category was changed the person approving the data corrections verified this information from other sources. |

Yes, by editing the book, you can change the category. It effectually puts the book in ONLY the category/sub-category you have selected. It DOES NOT always remove references to other categories, under the related topics. It WILL only sort into the category you selected when you edited it, when you sort your shelf by genre/subject. It WILL only show up in searches for the genre/subject that you chose. New database entries often come from another source, wherever the database is rented/leased from, and those entries come pre-categorized, and not always correctly so. It is not a matter of people on PBS putting the books in wrong. Most of them come that way into the database. And I definitely don't see an increase, it's been that way for a long time, you are probably just noticing more :) So, basically you can change the SORT category, but not the REFERENCES on the page. Usually the references change also, but not always. If you need any help, feel free to ask me here, or in a PM. But, do please take the cigar "cookbook" and move it somewhere else! hahahahaha |
