This is a story of the underground railroad. It seems to have many heroes in this book and once you pick it up you can not put it down. You find yourself thinking about some of the stories when you are not reading the book. One of the best books I have ever read.

A lot of mini-biographies. The first book I've seen to treat the subject so comprehensively.

Massa's property ran away!
The first two pages of the bibliography note the useful books on this subject published in the late 19th C. and in the latter half of the 29th C. I agtree with Larry Gaca's assertion that the real heroes were the escaping slaves, rather than only the 'conductors.' Arnold Fragston was both a slave (Kentucky) and man who rowed fugitives across the river to Ohio.
The flow of fugitives became a river in 1861. "Any action that weakened the South became a patriotic cause(430)." This was a far different attitude than in the 1820s.
18 chapters in 4 sections, index. Not well suited for use in a high school classroom emphasizing reading unless the subject is of high interest to the students.
