The Boys in Africa

Andrew Kennedy (Photographer)
Collection of all-male nudes. Now considered a late-modern erotic photography classic. The second appearance of the title in South Africa. ot;Desert Patrol", two of the most uninhibited celebrations of the masculine form presented in a natural setting. "Desert Patrol" consisted of soldiers (all Caucasian) of the South African Army, out in the scorching heat of the African desert. The storyline of "The Boys In Africa", which is also told entirely in photographs, is in a similar vein: A group of well-built and incredibly handsome hunters are on a safari. The heat is unbearable and they all quickly undress, frolic in the sand, swim in the waters, and play games in the buff, all in homoerotic camaraderie. They sunbathe for a while, get dressed, have a feast, then call it a night, presumably spent in intimate togetherness. At least for these men, the point of going on safari is to be together and get away from it all, not to kill animals (not one of which appears prominently in any of the photographs) . Apart from being a celebration of masculinity in all its virile beauty, what is genuinely touching is the unmistakable sense we get that the best things in life come to an end all-too-quickly (as it did, even more abruptly, in "Desert Patrol") . "Desert Patrol", "Shoreleave" and "The Boys in Africa" all say, "Life is short. Live it to the fullest". Amen. An overt homage to the classic male-nude genre, Kennedy's photographs are worthy of comparison with the very best: If Herbert List or Tom Bianchi ever photographed in the African bush, this is probably what they would have looked like. © 2005, ModernRare.com
