Ed McBain's 87th Precinct books are engaging and well written and, may I say, a "comfortable" read. I really like that the 87th Precinct takes place before cell phones and Google. I think that adds a level of complexity that a detective sitting in a clean office with a computer fails to deliver. These books are grittier.
