Ingredients
-
3/4 cup - whole wheat flour
-
1/2 cup - white flour
-
1 Tbs. - wheat germ
-
1 level tsp. - baking soda
-
1 tsp. - salt
-
1 - egg, beaten
-
1 cup - buttermilk
Directions
Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.
Combine the flour, wheat germ, baking soda, and salt in a large mixing bowl. In a separate small bowl, mix together the egg and buttermilk. Add egg mixture to the dry ingredients and mix well. If dough is too dry, add a bit more buttermilk until it becomes kneading consistency. Turn out onto a board, knead and shape into a round about 2 inches thick. Cut a deep cross across the top of the loaf. Place on a greased baking tin and dust the top of the loaf with flour, or sprinkle with a few whole oats. Bake for 30 to 40 minutes, or until the base sounds hollow when tapped.
Is epecially good when served warm, with butter and orange marmalade!
