While in New York, Gabriel happens to save a beggar, Maximilian Petion, an attorney who is part of The Brotherhood of Destruction trying to overthrow the corrupt ruling class. The Brotherhood, aided by international terrorists, stage a violent revolt and the narrator flees the devastated city by airship to found an agrarian utopia in Africa.
