A teenage girl recounts the suffering and persecution of her family under the Nazis, in a Polish ghetto, during deportation, and in a concentration camp.
Industry reviews
"A vivid memoir of a woman who lost her youth and family to the Nazis...What shines through is Sender's courage and strength and that of her family and friends--their love and determination to stay together. Punctuated by her own poetry, Sender tells a story that will be long remembered."

A heartwrentching tale of a young Jewish girl seperated from her family in concentration camp during WWII. She tells of her time spent in camp and with her brothers after the war. A tear jerker.

This was a really good book. It was very sad, but also carried a message of hope. We also must never let something like this happen again.

I cannot recommend this book enough if you are interested in the Holocaust. It's a harrowing account of a young teenager's life in the Lodz, Poland Jewish ghetto during World War II and then later in labor camps. Through it all, the love of her family, and hope, and her poetry keep her going. Her unemotional telling of the cruelties she and others suffered just makes things that much more horrifying.

This a fabulous account of Ruth Minsky Sender's life during the Holocaust. It's an easy and quick read and it will make you laugh, cry and want to know what happened to this girl during this terrible time period. This true story starts in Lodz Ghetto (a perspective we rarely read about) and takes you into a few different concentration camps. I read this with my 8th graders and they just love it. If you (or whoever is reading this) don't know much about the Holocaust, a little research should be done first to really understand what the author is talking about- to understand the places she takes you. It's great book and a great read! Good for middle school and high school or adults who like history or a story about overcoming problems. While you read it it's hard to remember it's non-fiction because it's so well written!
