It was refreshing to see a realistic view of the history surrounding this amazing time in America. I'd often heard that the only people who made money during the Gold Rush were the merchants. With the prices mentioned, it is easy to see why. It was very helpful to see today's prices/values given with the information. Without that information, it is hard to understand the impact or value of things.

One of the biggest surprises was the list of immigrants' countries. I was shocked to see how far the news of gold fever raced across the world (in the days before fast communication). It was sobering to see the unvarnished truth about the effects of the gold rush on the people who had lived there for generations.

If you are looking for the "real deal," this book provides an accurate took at a story that usually steeped in romance and myth.
