"Have you proof of this, my lord?" Camber interjected quietly. "Unless you have proof --"

Murdoch drew himself up like an angry spider. "If the King's Grace insists upon surrounding His royal person with Deryni, such as slew Your Grace's noble family many years ago, that is certainly the royal prerogative! But if I am to fulfill my responsibility, I must have some authority. The royal nursery is not the place for Deryni, Healers or no!"

Camber did not move. Only his ice-pale Alister eyes pled with Cinhil for a return to sanity. The Interregnum times were past. Cinhil knew that in his head. The Deryni who served the present royal line were of a different breed from those who had put the Fes-tils into power nearly a century before. But Cinhil must say that, not Camber or Alister Cullen. However, before long, King Cinhil Haldane dies, leaving three young sons as heirs to the throne. Now five regents move in to manage the affairs of state.

Four are human, unscrupulous, eager to gain the power of the government; one is Deryni, of a race with magical healing and shape-changing abilities. Born Camber MacRorie, he had assumed the shape of Alister Cullen, the king's trusted minister, whose death on the battlefield was known only to a few. Only as Alister could Camber work to unify Cinhil's realm. But Camber is removed from the council, and the remaining regents begin a vigorous program to persecute the Deryni, whose powers exceed those of humanity.

For, the regents reason, if the Deryni are not quelled, they can once again usurp the Haldane throne, returning the kingdom to the bloodthirsty tyranny of the pre-Cinhilera. And the campaign seems to be succeeding -- until Rhys the Healer discovers a secret Deryni power: one that permits the Derynis to use their gifts while living as humans.

Imaginative, breathtaking suspense for all devotees of the Deryni saga.
