As a boy James Darrel ran away to visit the gypsies; at age 12 he fell in love with Orian who could not bring herself to marry a poor man. After adventures in Spain, a love affair with a savage and beautiful gypsy girl, he returned to England, where he wrote a book on Spain that made him famous.
